Australia's rail network faces a critical test as severe weather disrupts vital supply chains.
The Australian Track Corporation (ARTC) is working tirelessly to restore essential rail links, ensuring Australia's national supply chain remains resilient in the face of severe weather impacts. While the Melbourne to Perth rail corridor has been successfully returned to service, the Sydney to Perth route faces more significant challenges.
Flash flooding has caused severe damage to the rail infrastructure, including structural damage to a rail bridge. This has led to a temporary closure of the corridor, which is expected to remain closed for approximately two to four weeks while remediation works are carried out. ARTC has engaged specialist engineers to support the repair of the bridge and is reviewing options to safely expedite these works.
The Adelaide to Darwin rail corridor remains open, ensuring continued freight connectivity to and from the Territory. ARTC is also working closely with freight operators to explore opportunities for additional services between Melbourne and Adelaide, supporting services that normally travel Sydney to Perth via Broken Hill to be rerouted through Melbourne and Adelaide where capacity allows.
ARTC remains in direct communication with customers and will provide further updates as recovery progresses. The network's resilience is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the ARTC team, who are committed to keeping Australia's supply chains moving, even in the face of adversity.
