Coyote breeding season is here, and it's time to take action to protect our furry friends! Idaho Fish and Game is urging pet owners to be extra cautious, especially in the Boise Foothills, as we navigate through this critical period.
But here's where it gets controversial... While conflicts between coyotes and domestic dogs can occur year-round, the breeding season, which typically spans from late February to June, brings an increased risk. Coyotes, during this time, may view dogs as potential threats or even prey, leading to aggressive behavior.
Ryan Walrath, the regional wildlife manager, sheds light on this: "Coyotes, like any wildlife, can become more territorial and aggressive during their breeding season. They might perceive dogs as competition or even as a potential meal."
And this is the part most people miss... The Boise area, with its popular hiking trails like Hulls Gulch and Military Reserve, provides an ideal habitat for coyotes to den and raise their pups. This proximity to human recreation and residential areas increases the chances of encounters.
"You can't avoid coyotes here; they're part of the landscape," Walrath emphasizes.
So, what can we do to ensure the safety of our pets and ourselves? Fish and Game recommends keeping dogs on a leash on all Boise Foothill trails from February to June, even in areas where off-leash dogs are usually permitted.
"A leashed dog with a human nearby can act as a deterrent, but it's not a foolproof solution," Walrath cautions.
In areas where aggressive coyote behavior has been reported, Fish and Game suggests avoiding those locations for a few weeks to let tensions cool down.
Remember, it's all about being proactive and adjusting our behaviors to coexist peacefully with these wild creatures.
