The discovery of an ancient goose fossil in New Zealand's Central Otago region has sent shockwaves through the scientific community, challenging long-held beliefs about the country's avian history. This remarkable find, named Meterchen luti, has revealed a previously unknown species that contradicts decades-old theories about the evolution of giant birds in Zealandia.
A Surprising Twist in Avian Evolution
The fossil, unearthed from the early-middle Miocene deposits of St Bathans, initially seemed to support the idea that the ancestors of the colossal, flightless Cnemiornis geese had been present in Zealandia for an astonishing 14 million years. However, a closer examination by Associate Professor Nic Rawlence and his team at the University of Otago has unveiled a different story.
"We were surprised to find that the bones, once thought to belong to geese, actually represented a new species, Meterchen luti," Rawlence explained. "This discovery highlights the dynamic nature of New Zealand's bird evolution, with species arriving and evolving in ways we hadn't anticipated."
The Meterchen luti Mystery
The Meterchen luti fossil, named after the nursery rhyme Old Mother Goose, provides a fascinating glimpse into the past. The bones, found in an ancient lakebed, suggest that this species played a role in the avian history of Zealandia, but its exact relationship to other geese remains a mystery. The study, published in Historical Biology, reveals that four bones belong to the tadornine duck Miotadorna sanctibathansi, five to a large anatid, and one or two to the newly discovered Meterchen luti.
Genetic Evidence Confirms the Later Arrival Theory
The most significant revelation is the absence of any clear connection between the St Bathans goose and the cereopsine geese, which contradicts earlier claims. Genetic evidence has long suggested that the ancestors of Cnemiornis geese arrived from Australia much later, around seven million years ago, rather than the previously assumed 14 million years. This new fossil evidence supports this later arrival theory, challenging the long-standing belief in the ancient lineage of these giant birds.
"Our reassessment highlights the importance of re-evaluating even well-studied fossils," lead author Alan Tennyson of Te Papa emphasized. "It demonstrates how our understanding of New Zealand's bird history can evolve, with new discoveries constantly reshaping our narratives."

While the lineage of Meterchen luti may have reached Zealandia over 14 million years ago, it left no descendants. "Our research demonstrates that the evolution of New Zealand's birds is not a static process," Rawlence concluded. The mud of St Bathans continues to teach us that even incomplete fossils can significantly alter our understanding of the past."
