National Capital Private Hospital’s future looks secure as Ramsay Health Care takes over after the previous owner entered receivership. The ACCC has given the green light for Ramsay to complete the acquisition, and the deal will see all assets and operations of the Canberra hospital transferred to Ramsay. The goal is to finalize the transaction in the first quarter of 2027.
Staffing and day-to-day care are expected to proceed as usual. Health Minister Rachel Stephen-Smith described the transition as smooth for employees who stayed on during the period of uncertainty. She noted that National Capital Private was a profitable facility and one of the standout hospitals within the Healthscope network, which helped make the sale proposition attractive.
Ramsay Health Care currently has no presence in the Australian Capital Territory. A key next step will involve Canberra Health Services coordinating with Ramsay to determine how the hospital network will collaborate going forward, particularly since National Capital sits on the Canberra Hospital campus.
Healthscope issued a statement supporting the sale to Ramsay and announced the sale of four other hospitals to different operators. It emphasized that employment and service continuity would be preserved across all sites, with staff keeping their current roles and terms, along with existing entitlements and length of service, under the new ownership where applicable.
In a separate note, the Northern Beaches Hospital’s operations were transferred to the New South Wales Government as part of the broader restructuring.
Minister Stephen-Smith welcomed the ACCC approval, highlighting the certainty it provides for Canberra-area patients and communities. She contrasted this outcome with greater uncertainty facing other jurisdictions where Healthscope hospitals are involved, underscoring the advantage of a prompt, clear resolution.
Healthscope’s remaining 31 hospitals are transitioning to a newly formed not-for-profit organization. The company described this move as a step toward ensuring long-term sustainability of private healthcare in Australia by reinvesting surpluses into hospitals, prioritizing patient care, employee wellbeing, and continued access to leading medical services.
Keith Crawford, the representatives’ spokesperson for receivers and managers, called the receivership process complex due to the extensive assets spread across multiple jurisdictions and the negotiations with various stakeholders. He expressed optimism about providing clear direction to patients, staff, and communities about their hospitals’ futures and about ongoing collaboration with the Healthscope team and stakeholders to implement the plan.
