In the world of MotoGP, where talent and precision meet, a remarkable story of resilience and growth unfolded in 2025. The journey of Raul Fernandez, a once-promising rider, is a testament to the power of perseverance and the right mindset.
The Struggle and the Breakthrough
Raul Fernandez, a name that had MotoGP fans buzzing with anticipation, arrived on the scene with an impressive resume. His Moto2 championship run in 2021, with eight wins and a runner-up finish, had everyone talking. However, his initial years in MotoGP didn't live up to the hype. Riding for KTM and Aprilia, his first three seasons were largely uninspiring, with a fifth-place finish in 2023 being the highlight.
But here's where it gets interesting. The 2025 season started on a disappointing note for Fernandez. He struggled to break into the top 10 in the first five rounds, and the criticism from Aprilia added fuel to the fire. However, the second half of the season witnessed a remarkable turnaround. Fernandez became a consistent top 10 finisher, and the breakthrough moment arrived at the Australian Grand Prix, where he claimed his maiden win. He ended the year on a high, narrowly missing out on victory in Valencia.
The Key to Success: Confidence and Preparation
Looking back at Fernandez's remarkable season, Davide Brivio, the boss of Trackhouse MotoGP team, attributes the success to better preparation and a boost in confidence.
"The talent has always been there; it's never been in question," Brivio said. "Everyone in the paddock knows how talented Raul is. I believe it was more about building his confidence and focusing on what truly matters in terms of physical preparation."
Brivio highlights how Fernandez's training methods changed during the winter, with a renewed focus on physical conditioning. This, coupled with improved results, gave Fernandez the confidence boost he needed.
"Last year, we saw him slow down towards the end of races. But this year, the consistency he showed throughout the races at Valencia and Phillip Island was remarkable. He made no mistakes, which was a significant improvement from the previous season."
And this is the part most people miss. The hard discussions the team had with Fernandez at the start of the season played a crucial role.
"We had some tough talks because finishing 17th or 18th is not acceptable for a rider of Raul's caliber. We needed to find out what was going wrong. We encouraged him to believe in himself and his talent."
From Le Mans onwards, Fernandez's performance improved drastically. He consistently finished in the top 10, which further boosted his confidence. The sprint podium in Indonesia and the win at Phillip Island were the icing on the cake.
"The Indonesia podium was a turning point, and then the win at Phillip Island sealed the deal. We have Raul in great shape, and it's a shame the season had to end," Brivio added.
