When the world watches, should athletes stay silent? The recent Milano Cortina Winter Games have become a stage not just for athletic prowess, but for a heated debate ignited by Team USA's freestyle skier, Hunter Hess.
But here's where it gets controversial... Hess, when asked about the political climate back home, expressed that representing the U.S. at this moment brings up "mixed emotions." He clarified that his representation isn't about endorsing everything happening in the U.S., but rather about honoring his friends, family, and the positive aspects of the country he believes in. "Just because I'm wearing the flag doesn't mean I represent everything that's going on in the U.S.," he stated, emphasizing that his participation is for the people who have supported him.
This candid response from Hess quickly drew sharp criticism. President Trump took to social media on Sunday to label Hess a "real Loser" for saying he doesn't represent his country. The President further suggested that if Hess felt that way, he shouldn't have tried out for the team, adding, "Very hard to root for someone like this. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!"
And this is the part most people miss... The backlash wasn't limited to the President. Trump administration envoy Rich Grenell publicly suggested Hess should "move to Canada if you aren't proud to wear USA." Even Republican Congressman Tim Burchett chimed in, advising Hess to "shut up and go play in the snow."
This situation echoes concerns raised by other athletes. U.S. National Champion figure skater Amber Glenn, who is set to be the first openly LGBTQ+ woman to compete at an Olympic Games, revealed she's been facing a "scary amount of hate/threats" for sharing her views on issues affecting the LGBTQ+ community. Glenn explained that while she anticipated some reaction, she's disappointed by the intensity of the negativity. She plans to limit her social media use for her well-being but remains steadfast in her commitment to using her voice for her beliefs.
Earlier in the week, Glenn had spoken about the challenges faced by the LGBTQ+ community under the current administration, noting the need for the community to unite and fight for human rights. She highlighted how these struggles have, paradoxically, made the community stronger and more supportive of each other. "Politics affect us all. It is something that I will not just be quiet about because it is something that affects us in our everyday lives," she asserted, underscoring that her disagreement with certain policies doesn't diminish her pride in the resilience and strength of her community.
Meanwhile, Mikaela Shiffrin, a decorated U.S. alpine skier, offered a more measured response when questioned about tensions in the U.S. She quoted Nelson Mandela, stating, "Peace is not just the absence of conflict, peace is the creation of an environment where we can all flourish, regardless of race, color, creed, religion, gender, class, caste or any other social markers of difference." Shiffrin expressed her hope to represent values of inclusivity, diversity, kindness, and sharing during the Games, alongside tenacity and a strong work ethic.
