Willson Contreras: Red Sox's Backup Catcher Solution? (2026)

The Boston Red Sox's hunt for a backup catcher in 2026 might have a surprising solution already on their roster. It seems the answer could be none other than Willson Contreras, the slugging All-Star acquired from the St. Louis Cardinals. But is this a viable plan, or a risky gamble? Let's dive in.

Contreras, brought in by Chief Baseball Officer Craig Breslow, was initially slated to play first base. However, here's where it gets controversial: Contreras began his MLB career as a catcher for the Chicago Cubs. And now, he's expressed willingness to return to the position.

"Contreras said on a video call this week with reporters he’s willing to play catcher, where he’s spent the majority of his career before transitioning to first base," reports Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic. While he might see some time behind the plate, the Red Sox currently prefer him at first base and as a designated hitter.

Contreras was a full-time catcher as recently as 2021, and the Cardinals didn't move him to first base until the 2025 season. Given this recent transition, it's fair to question if Contreras is truly the primary backup catcher option for Boston.

But the Red Sox haven't stopped looking. According to Sean McAdam of Masslive.com, the team has been actively seeking an upgrade at the second catcher spot. They were interested in free agent Victor Caratini, who signed with the Minnesota Twins, and also considered J.T. Realmuto before he re-signed with the Phillies.

And this is the part most people miss: The Red Sox have been searching for a catcher to pair with Carlos Narvaez since last summer. They even inquired about trading for Kyle Teel and showed interest in Dalton Rushing.

Currently, Connor Wong holds the No. 2 catcher position, but his hold is tenuous. Wong struggled in 2025, batting a disappointing .190 with a career-low .500 OPS in 63 games.

So, what do you think? Is Contreras the answer, or should the Red Sox continue their search? Could his willingness to catch again be a game-changer, or is it a long shot? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
